SELF BRANDING - ROSH

Design, develop and produce self branding that effectively communicates and promotes you as an individual, designer and learner. To inform your design decisions you should reflect upon your learning aspirations and design direction. You should aim to communicate the context of your interests by referencing specific designers, studios, principles and audiences where necessary.

You should use this brief as an opportunity to explore, develop and demonstrate content, processes and areas of design that interest you at this point in time and may indicate your emerging creative concerns in Graphic Design.

ROSH is the design name I decided to go with, the general aim being, to create a brand name I can eventually use in whatever creative outlet I wish to channel into. The general aim is to not catergorize myself into one area of creativity. I want to delve into all types of design, not just graphic design, but clothing design, set design, architecture etc. Perhaps my own studio? I do not know, I only aim high because if you aim high you will achieve higher than setting the bar low, it all depends on the amount of time and effort I devote to the idea. I have already gained experience in clothing production, and interior design, my idea for ROSH is to create a brand with flexibility that holds all creativity under one roof.

I had other design name ideas however they did not seem to fit such as..

- creative outlet
- designrosh
- creative affair
- design affair
- roshtak
- R. Takhar
- R.TAK

In terms of selecting ROSH as my name, was really due to the diversity of its approach, It seemed like something that could be displayed on multiple platforms, such as Apple etc. I did not want to go with my name as first I find to a wider audience it would be hard to pronounce and has a silent letter. I thought it all circumstances, productivity, layout, size... ROSH fits well.

Retaining the classic Google colour scheme, ditching the previous serif font and rendered in Product Sans, which was first spotted in the Alphabet word-mark. Which has now formed into a nice animated transition. You could also say though that the new approach, takes away Google's quirkiness, which is something I took on board when creating my typeface as it can convey the type to look quite bland. But this is the style and modern approach to type. Just by looking at Googles history; they have managed to dominate the market since opening their doors in 1998. The reason they are the monopolising company they are today is because evolution is something they nail. So following their ideology towards rebranding  could be the the smarter move forward. However my gut feeling says otherwise, I will experiment with both styles. The expressionist, and the modern more refined approach.

To begin with I started to play with the functions of type, experimenting with different methods of layout, size, format etc. to try and form some design ideas out on paper. Experimenting with kerning, superscript/subscript and spacing. An anoyance of mine is; posting my experimentation because it never looks good. I am a perfectionist so its fustrating when I have to show work which I feel is inadequate. But, the concept draw up stage is crucial to finding a final design because hand work allows to impose specific constraints and a different style of creativity.
I tried to narrow down the selection process, to a smaller amount. The difficulty and cause of main delay to this task was selecting the typeface, I spent hours tweaking and deciding what design to use. Out of the many I did by hand, I scanned them in and image traced the designs. These were the last of my choices. I was really feeling a brushed avante-garde design. Something that went against the norm, with its simplicity. And careful choice of colour selection, and size management.

I took the inspiration from matisse. Really taking from the style of post-impressionism, I find this design visually appealing and strong contrast makes it stand out. It is different in its approach, I tried to create a subtly to this typeface. Whilst employing old techniques in my work. Such as employing the grid system. Constructing a baseline and descender line and then setting guidelines for Kerning to adjust the correct spacing between characters, to make it more visually pleasing.

Those were the final concept designs for my website, applications, mobile, letterheads, labels and clothing.Taking inspiration from conceptualists such as Saul Bass, as a main design motif in my work, and employing shades of Kanye West’s Life of Pablo album cover in some of my esbsite design. Overall I am pleased with the final outcome. If I could have more time to work on the website design I would love to expand and refine my ideas/techniques, same goes to the products listed. For this brief I wanted to experiment with a different style, to the one I am used to. Relying heavily on minimalism and a range of other different approach.’ When creating the website design I was visualisation an animation more than just simply creating still screens. The design prcoess was intended for an animation that worked in a harmonic way, as if each page flows to the next, however I need to refine my skills in animation design to create what I really wanted to create. I am looking strongly into gif work, and animation as before I actually set up my website, I would lke to enhance my skills in animation, as I want a degree of quality in the design of my website. The phone displays came out well, I experimented with a different  design approach, demonstrating a possible logo design, taking inspiration from Saul Bass’ ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’ design, whilst incorporating my created typeface worked well I believe. Whilst undertaking the typography style of Jean Michel Basquiat in my clothing label concept designs, emulating the repetition in the type itself creating a continuous pattern.
