Looking into further education after university, I have been analyzing potential masters courses. This ambition stems from both a desire to want to become more business minded and also the opportunity to travel.

It is my desire to learn more about business, but I would like to learn it from a design perspective. The courses I am applying to takes in design strategy concerns and blends this with business theory. I think this is a good course to study because not only does it benefit my interests and desires but also my style of study. It can become more relatable.

One of the requirements for applying to these courses is submitting a portfolio. This is why there is a need for a website.

The universities requirements for the portfolio is:

Present work that you believe best represent your background, interests in design thinking, design strategy, innovation, work process, and writings. These may include research outcomes, design strategies, articles, publications, photography, interviews, presentations, video clips, websites, blog URLs, essays, or other media. Where appropriate, include descriptions of the projects.

I have organised my work specifically to the requirements of the universities I am applying for. Displaying my best work, which is also relevant to the courses I am applying for. The work I have displayed on my website is work that shows my innovative entreprenurial side to graphic design, illustrating work such as: my app ideas, clothing range etc.

I have includes an issuu publication of my dissertation on Design Thinking. This will benefit my application massively, as it is a big part of of the courses I am applying to. It also demonstrates my understanding and passion for design thinking, which  ultimately shows my passion for the course.

My decision to create a colourful, but minimal design was to effectively keep the focus of my website on the content. By keeping all of the content on one page it has kept the navigation simple, allowing to easily transition through my work.

PPP EVALUATION

Throughout this submission, I have tried testing myself in new ways. I was not sure if graphic design was the right career for me so in order to test myself I tried immersing myself into the industry. One way I did this was going on a placement for 4 days. As an experience, it taught me many things, it was interesting as the way I thought the process of graphic design is, wasn't very evident in my placement. The process of research, experimentation, finding solutions, feedback etc. At university, it feels like an integral part of what the graphic design process consists of. I enjoy that process, it is something I will carry with my moving on from 3rd year. Leeds Arts have enabled me to nurture my design process, through this is the way my best outcomes are made. At my placement it was very monotonous, everything was so systematic. The course of the 4 days felt unnatural to me and was not a strong indication to me that this is where I want to be.

I want to continue learning, and evolving as a person. I realize now that I believe in my own ideas and want to learn how to harness the best out of these ideas. This is why I want to do a Business orientated masters. I want to become more business savvy, so I can learn the most effective way to pursue my ideas, and make them into reality.

This was the sole benefit of creating a website. I tried to create a website that appeals to the admissions team at the selected universities I have applied for. Seeing as my course is also related to design thinking, I tried to incorporate as much design solution based work as possible. I even included my design thinking dissertation. I hope that gives me strong brownie points for my admission. I would not have wanted to study this course if it was not for my dissertation study this year. I feel this year all 3, PPP, COP and studio have a deeper link to my own progression than any other year, this is probably due to being in full control this year. I have enjoyed it, as there is more transparency between the 3.

My study of graphic design could not be more relevant to my future. However, I feel it has taught me things I originally did not envision. What I have learned that is so important to me from this course, are aspects that improve the self, and improve me in a way that can be relative to any career path. PPP has taught me how to deal with speaking in front of large audiences by testing us regularly. It has improved my communication skills with peers. It has opened the doors to collaboration and working with like-minded individuals who share common goals. It has helped me understand the consumer, and how to relate the product constantly back to the consumer. These are skills I don't believe I would get on just any course. Which is why I highly rate this module. Originally I did not think so, I spent the last two years putting it in the back, but now I realize it exists for the sole purpose to benefit yourself, and improve yourself.

DESIRE TO LEARN BUSINESS

Looking into further education after university, I have been analyzing potential masters courses. This ambition stems from both a desire to want to become more business minded and also the opportunity to travel.

From the past few years I have analysed what kind of worker I am, where and how I work best and what position I want be in moving forward. I now understand after much contemplation that I would like to expand on my own ideas and passions. I enjoy the creative production of design but what I have come to appreciate more this year is the process of design. I believe the design thinking approach to working can evolve past just creating designs. The design thinking process can also be very beneficial to business.

The course has taught many qualities that are linked to having a strong business sense.

- From presenting in front of a large audience
- Developing products and services, undergoing deep research to apply them to the needs and requirements of the consumer
- Collaboration and communication

It is my desire to learn more about business, but I would like to learn it from a design perspective. The courses I am applying to takes in design strategy concerns and blends this with business theory. I think this is a good course to study because not only does it benefit my interests and desires but also my style of study. It can become more relatable

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS

I found the whole process frustrating, as I felt I did not convey my ideas well. I only realized after that trying to explain a business proposal in 10 minutes just was not going to be possible. Think the nerves got to me a little and missed some vital information. I treated this presentation as how I have prepared myself for life after university. Not necessarily what I have done this year. This may have been an error on my part. But this is what is most important to me in terms of personal professional practice. How am I preparing myself for life after university. I tried to explain this by showing:

- How I am pre-planning the production of my business
- How I am planning to get further education in business to enhance my understanding and ultimately improve my business
- How my placement informed my decision of proceeding with my entrepreneurial motives.

These are the points I tried to focus on as it shows the ways in which I am trying to set up my own future.

PLANS AFTER UNIVERSITY

Looking into further education after university, I have been analyzing potential masters courses. These courses stem from both a desire to want to become more business minded and also the opportunity to travel.

From the past few years I have analysed what kind of worker I am, where and how I work best and what position to I want be in moving forward. I now understand after much contemplation that I would like to just expand on my own ideas and passions. I want to learn how to build and make money from these passions and ideas in the best possible way. I enjoy the process of design but what I have come to appreciate more is the approach of design more than the actual designing. I believe the design thinking approach to working can evolve past just creating designs but any job. The design thinking process I believe can also be very beneficial to business.

Anyway it is my desire to learn more about business, but I would like to learn in from a design perspective. It takes in design strategy concerns and blends this with business theory. I think this is a good course to study because not only does it benefit my interests and desires but also my style of study. It can become more relatable.

I shall look to apply at the top places in the world for the courses that interest me in both a design and business sense.

BRIDGEVA HOMES - OI DESIGNS

Another brochure I have done for Oi designs team. This project simply involved putting the finishing touches on the publication. Looking into the typeface, I wanted something that replicated the style of homes they advertise. Lucinda Grande replicated the style I was going for.

I wanted the typeface to emote architectural motifs. Lucinda is a sharp but sleek typeface. It is sharp and rigid with elements of sophistication applied it it's arches and curves. This is why I chose the typeface.

SPITTIN BEAR - PLACEMENT

This project was started in my placement, but still on-going. Collaborating with one of the graphic designers at Oi. The company is Devil Wears based at the Gherkin in London. This process was different, similar to the process taken for the Arda brief. Although there was no template or specifics for this brief, the basis for this project started from an image. There was not a research stage, the following image was what was given by the company as a starting point. Using this image as a reference for the final outcome.

They also provided us with images of the style they wanted to replicate. This was stepping out of my comfort zone, however it was quite seemless going through the stages of design.

This is an example of the experimentation undertaken for this brief.

Above is mock up board of different ideas. Appealing to the requirements set at the beginning of the process. In my personal opinion there was not a design I liked from these initial concepts. They are just to get a gauge on what concept they wanted us to evolve and refine.

Still waiting for them to get back to us to continue this project.

OI DESIGN - ADRA

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency International is a humanitarian agency operated by the Seventh day Adventish Chruch for the purpose of providing individual and community development and disaster relief. In 2004, ADRA reported assisting nearly 24 million people with more than £159 million in aid. Its staff numbered over 4,000 members. As of the end of 2007, it had operations in 125 countries. According to orbes, in 2005, ADRA ranked among America's 200 largest charities.

As you can see it's quite a large company so initially felt nervous stepping into it, then I actually came to designing for them I realized how simple it really was. They provide all the information they require, and even provide templated grids for certain projects. Overall the process became quite repetitive and not very creative in comparison to degree work.

This is an example of the grid they apply you with before generating a booklet design.

So my role here was to design their report publication. Along with a few publications including posters and booklets. I spent 2 days on this brief. With each project I was paid £100. As a process it was a lot simpler than university. Mainly because everything has already been thought out for you by both the team at Oi and a few from Adra. The use of templates made my job a lot easier. Perhaps not in the ways I would like. One of the main reasons I enjoy the process of a design is investing myself into a project, whether that is within research, experimentation etc. I am putting myself into the brief. This type of work is very monotonous, and I get no personal motivation or joy from briefs such as these.

When I spoke to some of the team at Oi asking whether they enjoy briefs like these, I received no positive feedback. Many stating that majority of Oi's clients revolve around this kind of work and just comes as part of the job. It may not be the most exciting work however if it's by a big company then these types of jobs are easy money, as the reward is far greater than the service/product provided.

These were continuing on from my work with Adra for Oi. A range of posters was made with the same colour scheme and concepts applied to all, just experimenting with different formats. None of the content is generated by myself.

OI DESIGNS - TESTIMONIAL

TESTIMONIALS

"As a small marketing team, we don't have a designated graphic designer in-house to create the assets we need, but of course our brand and public image is still really important to us. Oi Designs has almost become an extension of our team, helping us improve our communications at all levels by adding a touch of graphic flair. From icons and one-off graphics through to ebooks and full web pages, Oi-designs is swift and reliable with designs we can count on."
